Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, rooted in Sacred Scripture and centered on the Eucharist, Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School embraces the values of Education, Faith, and Citizenship.
The Lake Michigan Catholic School Fund will host its 31st Annual Dr. John Proos Laker Athletics Golf Classic on Fri., Aug. 18 at Harbor Shores Golf Club, 201 Graham Ave, Benton Harbor. There will be
an 11 a.m. shotgun start, and the field is limited to the first 128 golfers to register.
All money raised will benefit the elementary, middle and high school athletics programs at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School. In addition, a school supporter has pledged matching funds up to $75,000.
Golfers can enjoy on-course games, raffles and prizes. Non-golfers can get involved by donating to and participating in the silent auction, or by attending the 19th hole cocktail hour. The silent auction features a variety of premium items including Notre Dame hockey and basketball tickets, custom-made Our Lady of the Lake swag and much more.
As Laker athletics’ primary fundraiser, the event positions Laker coaches to better equip their teams beyond what is provided for in the school budget. With this support, the Laker athletics program has remained fee-free, meaning families do not have to “pay to play” sports. Field maintenance, new uniforms for several teams, and improvements to the high school gym were among last year’s investments.
“When our baseball coach requested a new pitching machine, it was funds from the golf outing that made it possible. We were also able to refinish the gymnasium at the high school and include our new logo. We’d like to do the same this year at the elementary campus. We’re also planning to replace the remaining outdated uniforms,” explains Athletic Director Phil McDonald.
Despite being a small school, Laker athletics is a robust and competitive program. “I’m continually impressed by the number of teams that have won conference and state championships and academic state honors,” shares McDonald.
Last school year’s achievements include Academic All-State honors for boys’ and girls’ cross country and basketball teams, and the girls’ soccer and track teams. Division 4 District Championships went to the girls’ soccer, volleyball and track teams. The girls’ soccer team also captured the Berrien Catholic Schools Conference Championship. The girls’ track team posted regional championships in three events, qualifying for the state finals in all three.
Formed in 1971, the Lake Michigan Catholic School Fund is a 501c3 that is independent from the diocese, parishes and schools; the Fund has generated over $7.2 million in direct financial support for the advancement of Catholic education in Southwest Michigan. Annually, Laker families receive awards for tuition assistance and college scholarships totaling approximately $200,000—making a quality, Catholic education affordable for the one in four Laker families who rely on tuition assistance.
A private Catholic school accredited by the Michigan Non-Public Schools Accreditation Association, Our Lady of the Lake provides an exceptional academic experience by focusing on Education, Faith and Citizenship. Our Lady of the Lake is among the state’s 10 best Catholic high schools, and features an all-star teaching staff (40% of whom hold masters’ degrees).
