ST. JOSEPH, MI: In an ever-changing education world, Lake Michigan Catholic Schools continues to foster a project-based learning environment focused on innovation and relevance. LMC provides a holistic approach to education that is hands-on, inventive and research-based.
“We want our students to know that learning is and can be fun,” says LMC Middle/High School Principal James White. “Are we rooted in traditional Catholic faith? Absolutely! But our curriculum and instruction are innovative and progressive. Our labs promote new kinds of learning that transforms and opens minds.”
LMC’s project-based learning has taken students from coding robots to flying drones. Last semester, middle school students worked with Finch robots. They developed ways the robots could be used to communicate to classmates across the classroom through coding patterns of effective basic interactions. Middle schoolers also learned to program Tello drones and navigate them around obstacles like tables, chairs, walls and even fellow students. The class discussed the application of drones in regard to delivery, like Amazon, and surveillance.
“Project-based learning challenges students to look beyond themselves and allows them to share ideas more freely,” says Kathleen Sant, LMC 8th grade teacher. “Science is a natural fit. Students identify problems that have science-related content or topics and try to use science to solve the problem. Project-based learning gives more control to students, empowering them with ownership in their work and outcomes.”
Students also participate in innovative project-based learning, such as the Southwestern Michigan College’s Innovation Expo which is virtual this school year. LMC 5th graders participated in the innovation challenge by creating prototypes and submitting presentations, which will be judged this spring.
“Project-based learning allows students to stretch and strengthen their minds,” says LMC Elementary School Principal Larry Hoskins. “At the elementary level, students take what they learn during traditional instruction and apply it outside of the classroom to real-world opportunities.”
Lake Michigan Catholic is a private pre-kindergarten through 12th grade Catholic school dedicated to nourishing the human spirit – mind, body and soul – through Jesus Christ.
